Why are safety switches important?

Safety switches saves lives! They are an essential safety feature fitted to one or more of the electrical circuits in your home. If an electrical fault occurs, a safety switch can turn off the electrical supply in less than a second. In Queensland all households must have a safety switch installed on all light and power circuits.

A safety switch monitors the flow of electricity continuously and detects imbalances. When it detects an imbalance in a live wire, the electrical supply to that circuit is almost instantly cut-off.

The risk of electric shock is reduced significantly with a safety switch. If you do not have a safety switch installed on all circuits or need an expert electrician’s advice, give us a call right away.

One Safety Switch Is Not Enough

Your power point circuit might have a safety switch fitted and you could think it is enough. When one safety switch is protecting one circuit, the circuit will only trip if the safety switch detects an imbalance in the current int that circuit.

This does not help if the electrical fault affects appliances not connected to that circuit, such as the oven or hot water system, and can increases the chances of an accident. It is recommended to install safety switches (RCDs) on all circuits - power, lighting, air conditioning, pool, hot water, etc for complete protection.

Our electricians frequently find unsafe and non-compliant safety switches in our clients’ homes. Stay safe and get your switchboard inspected today.

How to test a safety switch?

Just having a safety switch is not enough. You need to test it regularly to ensure it is working properly so it is ready to go when you need it the most.

Testing a safety switch is as easy as following these quick steps:

Note: Avoid using any electrical appliances or circuits until your electrician fixes the problem.
